Larry & Karren Franckowiak Named PHoPS Parrot Heads of the Year for 2009
The announcement was made at the February 28th Business Meeting by outgoing Membership Director, Dave Calhoun. Dave told those present that Larry and Karren joined PHoPS in 2001 and since that time have rarely been absent from club activities. They are always there to help set up, clean up, take tickets, paint houses, provide ice for Gatoritas, you name it, they’re always willing to help out. Congratulations to Larry and Karren Franckowiak, the 2009 Parrot Heads of the Year! Phins Way Up!

A Message from our Phearless Leader – President Bobi Atlee
Here are some of the highlights from Bobi’s state of the phlock address from Sunday’s Business Meeting:
- · We are once again a sanctioned PHiP member in good standing and have our certificate on file
- · We submitted our club history to Margaritaville for their club spotlight feature
- · We created and used a new RFP (Request For Proposal) for entertainment at our events
- · We successfully revised our by-laws so they more closely reflect what the club is doing now
- · Kathy Pompeo is updating our membership badges
- · We are nearly finished with the process to become a 501c7 organization
- · George Margetan has begun producing our Cascade Conch monthly newsletter
- · We are putting out Come Monday for members of our club currently seeking employment
- · We are helping to support other PHC events by sending merchandise, auction baskets and having our members help with the events
Bobi stated that the goal for 2010 is to get our name out there in the public by participating in some additional events, such as the American Lung Association 5k and also to provide auction baskets to some other charitable groups, like the Tux and Tails event coming up to raise money for the Humane Society. With your help and enthusiasm 2010 is going to be a great year!

NEW – FARE START EVENT THIS SATURDAY NEEDS YOUR HELPING HANDS:
Please contact Alicia Smith if you are interested in attending this Saturday, March 6, 2010.
From Alicia’s email:
A little about Fare Start:
FareStart is a culinary job training and placement program for homeless and disadvantaged individuals. Over the past 17 years, FareStart has provided opportunities for over 3,000 people to transform their lives, while also serving over 3.5 million meals to disadvantaged men, women, and children.
FareStart provides nutritious meals to childcare centers, including Head Start programs, and homeless shelters around the Seattle area 365 days a year. In 2008, we produced more than 491,332 meals for area childcare centers and shelters.
FareStart was founded on the concept of providing dignified, nutritious meals to those in need, and indeed, these contract meals remain the foundation of our business today.
In addition to being a touchstone of our history and mission, these meal programs serve as a valuable hands-on training opportunity for our students. Under the supervision of our skilled Chef Instructors, FareStart students learn and hone their new skills as they prepare both the childcare and shelter meals. This working classroom offers our students a chance to gain proficiency and confidence in the kitchen, while also learning about nutritional guidelines (USDA and CACFP), safe food practices, and meal planning.
Childcare and shelter meals also provide FareStart with an important revenue source. As with all of our businesses, revenue generated through our contract meals goes directly back into the program to fund our job training and placement efforts. A wonderful “full circle” is created when our students work hard to provide dinner for those staying in a shelter while simultaneously transforming their lives and working towards their own self-sufficiency.
Details:
We will be working in their Contract kitchen preparing meals to be delivered to shelters and childcare programs.
We will meet out front of the Fare Start kitchen at 10:15 this Saturday March 6h and we will work till 3:30
After we are finished then we will head to a pub for some much deserved boat drinks!
